Ryan's Music Picks 🛰 Cut Copy - So Cosmic

another classic mixtape

Cut Copy - So Cosmic (2008)

CDs were made, but they are prohibitively expensive

Cut Copy exploded onto the scene in 2007/8. They’d had moderate success with their debut album, but their album In Ghost Colours, which mixed classic 80s post-punk sounds with 2000s dance music (and great songwriting), launched them into the indie consciousness. I said it was my #4 album of the year at the time.

Before the album was released, singles hit the blogs and people were stoked. In classic Aussie fashion, the Cut Copy crew released a digital mixtape, which also got a limited CD run (it’s on discogs and it’s not cheap). The mix itself has a handful of remixes of album tracks along with music from their influences and contemporary peers. The download link is long dead, but here’s their tracklist and info about the mix. It’s got Giorgio Moroder, Jean Michel Jarre, Aphex Twin, Fleetwood Mac, and Panda Bear.

The mix just rules, in my opinion. It’s eclectic while remaining somehow cohesive. It’s literally a constant jam for a solid hour, and I can listen to it on repeat and not get bored. Unfortunately it’s not streaming besides YouTube or Soundcloud bootlegs, though I did find a download link.

a myspace link in the wild!
