remember music?

it’s still good. I bought some albums today, and realized I felt like talking about them. So now here ya go

(content warning: one of these album covers has a big spider on it)

This was originally a limited release on a tiny tape label (that doesn’t even exist any more). But it’s become one of CFCF’s enduring classics, at least to me. I missed the cassette release 15 years ago, so I had to grab this limited-release CD. This is an album made from the textures of 80s and 90s new age, brought to the 2010s. It’s now a double nostalgia-bomb and it rules.

Another album I found after the physical release had already sold out. This album features a former member of Fela Kuti’s legendary Afrobeat crew, and hits a great balance between Afrobeat, modern hip-hop-influenced jazz, and great songwriting. The vibes are impeccable.

Perfect release for Father’s Day weekend, this is a solid slab of Dad-shoegaze. Fans of Starflyer 59 will find lots to like here, but it’s not just treading in the footsteps of giants. There’s some incredible grooves buried in these tracks, waiting to lock you on.

A buddy sent me a clip of some stream where someone talked about an offshoot of Dungeon Synth called Dino Synth, based on soundtracks to dinosaur documentaries from the 80s. That’s all I needed to hear, so I quickly tracked this down. Obviously it rules.

(Not to be confused with the legendary DJ and producer who mostly goes by a shorter version of this dinosaur name.)

sorry about the spider

This came across my feed multiple times on bluesky, both of them mentioning that it was a fantastic example of one of my favorite metal genres: tech death. Technical death metal is made up of tons of shredding and crazy double- and quadruple-bass drum rhythms. If you’re not down with all the shouty growling, check out track 9, Strelly, which is an instru-metal track.

So, the newsletter’s back. No set schedule, just when I have a stack of music I feel like saying stuff about. Maybe I’ll drop my top 10 of 2025 in October, who knows?

Here’s some drone music I made

I’m working on bringing back the old action movie podcast I did with a good friend. If you want to listen to two dudes talk about movies, check out Super Action Bros on Apple or Spotify.
