This has been a funky week, here’s some good funky music

Some new and maybe new-to-you music

We have sections this week:

New Music!

love this cover format

The secret British soul funk collective Sault has blessed the world with a new album of perfection. Works just as well for Saturday night as it does for Sunday morning.

Two weirdo pop greats collaborate on an album that feels totally fresh but is drenched in the sounds and the beats of 1999-2001. I just wish it was longer.

The Throwback Zone

**aesthetic**

Charming Japanese pop from more than a decade ago. I love how many different instruments are used throughout this album and how the songs can tug on my heartstrings even though I don’t understand the lyrics.

took this one while the car was parked, I promise

This one is a classic to me, from a year (2005—twenty years old!) full of those mid-2000s indie classics. The Mariner’s Revenge Song is still an all-timer, the kids love this one.

yes that’s a Muppet McDonalds toy from 1994

Cibo Matto - Stereo Type A

This album rules. Yeah, it’s 26 years old and it’s equal parts goofy and badass while remaining 100% funky. I could listen to Shibuya-kei stuff, and Cibo Matto specifically, forever.

Casiopea (1979)

I got served a reel on Instagram that talked about this album with a clip of one of the tracks and I was hooked instantly. It’s a combination of technical jazz rock that doesn’t hew too close to that “intro to the 10-o’clock news” sound and some real spacey vibes that very very clearly influenced a lot of video game composers in the 80s and early 90s.

It’s over!
