two Halloween bands, and two Halloween soundtracks!

In partnership with

happy halloween!

let’s get spooky

The Marshmallow Ghosts are a band on Graveface records, made up of The Casket Girls and Ryan Graveface, who release one new spooky album every year on Halloween. Over the years, they’ve varied their output quite a bit, doing fake radio shows, scary stories, haunted house sounds, and more. This self-titled album got me into them, but The Collection is a great way to get most of their output. They’re going back to the basics this year and I can’t wait to hear the whole thing!

Over the Garden Wall soundtrack

Over the Garden Wall is a 10-episode animated series that perfectly captures a particular type of American fall/Halloween vibe, and a bit part of what makes it work is its incredible soundtrack. If you haven’t watched it, please track it down, you can watch it in one sitting like a movie. If you’re in SoCal, check out Requiem Cafe’s official Over the Garden Wall event!

Vince Guaraldi - It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown soundtrack

A sweet, funny, and sad meditation on disappointment, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is probably my favorite thing with Snoopy in it. The classic jazz soundtrack adds some new instrumentation compared to the inescapable Charlie Brown Christmas music, and the “Breathless” cue is never not playing in my head.

Who would have thought that Ryan Gosling and a children’s choir would make the perfect 2000s indie Halloween album? If “My Body’s a Zombie for You” doesn’t get you moving, you might not have any life left in that bag of bones.

here are a few old newsletters with some more spooky selections:
