two classic albums you need to hear, and some great instrumentals
August is nearly over
how did that happen?
A legend. A classic. Works in the background but if you foreground this dense piece of post-rock cinema, you’ll feel yourself and your spirit moved by this music. This has buoyed me, because it’s honestly it’s more hopeful than I feel lately. |
Delicate Steve is my favorite guitarist. He plays like other men sing, and I cannot get enough. This album of instrumental guitar music is laid-back and joyful, with at least one gospel classic interpolation and plenty of charm. |
![]() | The Indestructible Beat of Soweto - Volume One (1985)A world-changing compilation of South African music that brought a whole style of music onto the international stage and influenced a whole lot of stuff that came afterwards. But on its own merits, it’s pure joyful brilliance that absolutely has stood the test of time. |
Teen Daze continues his social media posting as he gets ready to release a new album (and I continue to write about it). Last week, he dropped the hint about this secret vaporwave album. It’s perfectly chill in that “background music in an empty mall” liminal way that the best vaporwave music tends to be. Well worth a listen. |
Do you remember DVDs?

In college, I got really into the Directors Label DVD compilations of music video and commercial work from up and coming directors. The Michel Gondry and Spike Jonze discs were my favorite, but they were such a special thing that really only worked in the pre-youtube DVD era. If you also want to have the same nostalgic feel as me, or if you want access to a bunch of great music videos, they’re all online on the Internet Archive now.
Have a great weekend
