The Prayer Chain’s Mercury 30th anniversary live at the Grove Anaheim

I might own a copy of this on CD?

This is one of those cult albums that the vast majority of people have never heard, and the select few who love this oddball Christian album are fanatically devoted. Mercury is an amazing 1995 combination of grunge and shoegaze, drawing from the same founts as the Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, and My Bloody Valentine. Broad and deep and meandering, this album is full of wild ideas that would have changed the music landscape had it hit big. Instead, every member of this band spent the next 30 years in the music industry, playing in bands like Starflyer 59, producing, and basically becoming the driving force behind the SoCal Chrindie scene.

Half of legendary 2000s DJ group Optimo, known as JD Twitch, passed away last week. He was one of those DJs that I always heard about but for some reason I never dove into. So I dove into their work last week and it blew me away. He has left behind an incredible body of work on his own and as part of Optimo. The mix above is one of their most legendary—there are several mind-blowing transitions in here that hit like a baseball bat. I am just scratching the surface with their work, but Philip Sherburne has done a lot of work cataloging some great stuff.

Doom metal geniuses have produced a single of instru-metal that relies on post-rock/math rock intricacies and and unstoppable groove.

And now some music videos:

I don’t know this band or the remixer, but I DO know KC Green’s This is Fine Dog, and a lot of these animators, including Louie Zong!

This video of the new track from Shlohmo is weird, but the track rules. I love that combination of shoegazey sludge and beats.

Three giants of the French pop and house scene come together as UFOs and make a perfect track. The last time this kind of thing happened, we got Music Sounds Better With You (Alan Braxe was part of that too!).

Shhhhh, want a secret? Go to this link and download track one. It’s a gorgeous Beach Boys cover by two giants of the aforementioned SoCal Chrindie scene: Frank Lenz and Richard Swift.
