Prestige Format Picks ☁ 6 June 2025
a killer house mix, great new hip hop, space ambient, and sprawling noise rock from a shoegaze legend
June gloom has hit us in earnest
read to the end for my new favorite TikTok series
A mix that started on the radio show/podcast from DFA-adjacent NYC DJ/host Tim Sweeney. This is a heady mix of, I guess, house music that works really multi-dimensionally for me. If I need to chill or if I need to buckle down and focus, this mix works either way. All of the individual cuts are great and each sounds like its own genre though they impressively add context to each other when combined into a perfect mix like this.
I learned about this one as a sidebar in an article about Open Mike Eagle’s new single. This is a three-mic rap supergroup with songs named after defunct department stores, “orbiting the dead mall as a spiritual concept” and rapping about life. Great broken-down beats and pass-the-mic song structures, it’s perfectly wordy and super listenable. I keep finding new favorite bits with every listen.
If you’re not aware of secretive South Korean emo shoegaze legend Parannoul, it’s time for you to remedy that. Once you’re caught up, come back and catch this album, his newest sprawling release. This album channels Godspeed You! Black Emperor and still manages to discover some deep grooves and some very emo moments.
As the name suggests, this is the third in a series of ambient space music, and it’s a collaboration of two internet ambient champions: 36 and Zakè. The first two albums in this series are absolutely worth listening to (I own them on tape and vinyl, respectively) but this new one is definitely the more melodic and uplifting entry in the series. Listen if you need to bliss out.

My new favorite TikTok series is this absolutely insane “ADHD Radio: Partial Request Live” which just plays the bits of songs that are stuck in your head. Maybe this is specifically for a certain type of neurodivergent millennial, but I am definitely the target audience. This person is a diabolical genius and I cannot stop watching these.

I don’t know if I agree with Stereogum’s 50 Best Albums of 2025 so far (how do they not have the new Cloakroom on this list? it might be AOTY for me) but there’s a ton of good new stuff and I’m still working through it.
Teenage Engineering announced some kind of sliding scale price thing for their OP-1 Field Edition, which essentially is a $400 price cut. Why not just announce a $400 price cut? But also, what is the profit margin on that thing that they can do a $400 price cut??
