two gorgeous lynchian masterpieces, brain buzz and ambient brilliance

Just under twenty minutes of fuzzy, hazy perfect pop. Feels intimately handmade in the best possible way, like something that was recorded just for you by a close friend.

If you, like me, were bowled over by the brilliance of Cindy Lee’s Diamond Jubilee, you need to give this one a listen. It’s noisy, slightly synth-y sad guitar pop songs. This feels very Lynchian, in the sense that it’s a bit off-kilter, haunting, while remaining soulful and earnest.

I set out to listen to Panda Bear’s newest one (the last track features Cindy Lee!) but I stumbled onto this one and got stuck here instead. I’m very familiar with Sonic Boom’s work, but I’ve never actually paid attention to him as an artist before now. This album is mostly built from simple looped samples and there’s something in how it’s put together that’s full of noises that make my brain buzz.

it is personally hurtful to me how much good ambient music there is from the 90s. I'm listening to an album I just discovered and it's 30 years old and it rules

I stumbled upon the massive archive of Japanese ambient satellite radio station St. Giga earlier this week (see below) and while doing some more research, I found this album. It’s a 30 year old album of ambient electronic music recorded for the aforementioned radio station and it still feels vital and brand new.

I found so much good music thanks to him this week.

82 hours of Japanese Ambient Radio This is the (quick) story of St. GIGA. Shout out to @insheepsclothinghifi for bringing this to my attention!

This video led me to this massive archive of field recordings and ambient music broadcast on a Japanese Satellite Radio station in the 90s. Here’s an article that explains it all in a bit more detail, and here’s the archive itself: https://archive.org/details/stgigaarchive

(There’s another Teen Daze TikTok that I’m saving for next week 😜)

Have a great weekend
